In House CT-Scanner installed!
After years of referring Patients for CT-Scans we have now our own CBCT (Cone Beam Computer Tomography) Scanner. The machine enables us to take scans of a limited FOV (Field of Volume).

Unlike the bigger CT-Scanners that means a low dose of radiation. Especially in cases with limited bone availability a conventional X-ray often doesn’t give enough information for a correct treatment planning. Vital anatomical structures like the sinus cavities in the upper jaw and the mandibular nerve canal are also easier identified as the CT-Image is not magnified unlike conventional X-rays.

Computer Guided Implantology:
In combination with the CT-Scanner we are using SimPlant Software which is a comprehensive System to position Implants on the Patients 3-D Image on the Computer screen. The software then is used to create a surgical guide based on a model of the Patients jaw (stereolithographic model).

The cost of dental Implant treatment to Patients in the UK exceeds the cost for comparative treatment in other countries by far. 10000 UK Patients a year travel to India, the USA or Hungary. Compared with other Countries in the Euro Zone the UK is placing fewer Implants than any other European Country. The reason is that Implant Manufacturers have been able to get away with high prices for a long time … However with the current economic downturn and the possibilities of the Internet British Patients looking for Alternatives.

Before you commit to travelling abroad for dental treatment, it’s important you are fully aware of what to expect and what risks are involved. You may know how to raise concerns about your dental treatment in the UK, but are you familiar with the process in a foreign country?

Some of the questions you may want to ask are:

• Who will be carrying out my treatment and what qualifications do they have?

• Will the dental team speak English? If not, will you provide a translator on the day of the procedure? • Do you have any references or testimonials from previous patients?

• How many times have you carried out the procedure I am having? What are the rates of success, complication, readmission and infection?

• Are you regulated by a professional body and do you have to be registered with them?

• Is the work guaranteed for a certain period of time? • What aftercare do you provide?

• What happens if I am unhappy with the results? Who pays for the extra flights, hotel and remedial work? • If there are complications and I need further treatment, is this included in the initial cost? • Do you have insurance to cover this procedure? • Do you have a complaints system in place? Can I see a copy of it? • Who can I contact for advice after the treatment?

The completion of implant treatment takes at least 3 visits which includes 3 flights and hotel stays. After a long dental treatment session ahead or finished that doesn’t make it a holiday stay. Most probably you will be not in the mood for sightseeing let alone nightlife enjoyment. You also need to calculate your additional costs: don’t forget car travel from and to UK Airports, Airport Parking Charges, and Return Flights not to forget Taxi fares from and to the clinic. If you travel in company costs like meals and getting around will add up too.

Flying after dental extractions or implant placement: the flight cabin is pressurized of an altitude of 10,000 feet. Therefore it is not recommended to fly for 48 hours after treatment.

The cost of Implants is one of the main factors for the high cost of the Treatment. But there are now High Quality Implants available at lower prices. Unfortunately due to “Brainwashing” and aggressive marketing of the Major Implant Companies many Practitioners in the UK are not aware that the time has come to leave the Comfort zone and be proactive to keep British Patients in the UK.

But there is hope: a handful of clinics in the UK charge between £1200 and £1500 for an implant completed with crown. Atlantic Dental located in the far South West of the country has attracted quite a few patients from ‘up country’ who couldn’t get affordable dental implant or other restorative treatment in their local area.

The lively town of Newquay in Cornwall doesn’t spring to mind if it comes to “Dental Tourism” however just 5 miles away fromNewquay-CornwallAirportit can be reached via London Gatwick in 50 min. The sleeper train from London Paddington takes slightly longer but it brings direct to the doorsteps of the clinic. Accommodation even in the Holiday Saison is affordable.

Atlantic Dental doesn’t just offer dental implants but also alternatives like Telescopic Dentures or Precision Attachments. Facial Rejuvenation and Orthodontic Treatments are also provided.

Ever since I started working as a Dentist I have had to deal with nervous and anxious Patients. Managing the psychological aspect of Patient care as well as getting some decent dental treatment done can prove a bit of a challenge especially if you are a freshly graduated dentist. Working in Berlin / Germany my weekly routine was to carry out dental treatments under general anaesthetic, often on children with severely neglected teeth. While that can be an effective way of getting someone out of his misery and sorting out things quickly I am glad that these days are over! After all a general anaesthetic has risks and working on an unconscious patient is somehow unsettling. So when I opened my practice and did more and more implant treatments I decided to attend a sedation course. To be able to cater for the few nervous patients in my practice. That was 3 years ago and I haven’t carried out one single sedation. But I have had Patients falling asleep during an Implant Operation… and snoring! I am quite convinced that all Patients can be treated pain free in a dental practice. Local Anaesthetics are effective enough for to eliminate nearly all pain. Of course there are exemptions: a drug addict or alcoholic patient quite often needs more anaesthetic and can be a challenge. Also an acutely infected tooth can be a bit difficult to ‘numb’ and will need certain techniques of injecting the anaesthetic in the right ‘spot’.

There are exemptions where I refer Patients for treatment under general anaesthesia: lower wisdom teeth are sometimes better removed under sedation or general anaesthetic.

All my Implant Treatments including Bone Graft Procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic and with adequate pain control and post operative care. It is always astonishing for me how little pain or swelling patients show when they come for their postoperative check.

One of the reasons for the relatively easy pain control in implant surgery is the fact that the bone itself has very few nerve endings compared to a pulp chamber of a tooth.

Conclusion: Dental Implant Treatment can be carried out pain free and safely under local anaesthesia. In cases where a psychological barrier exists (phobia) a ‘one off’ treatment under general anaesthesia or sedation can be helpful. Quite often subsequent treatments can be then carried out under local anaesthetic.

Unknown to many Patients and Dentists in the UK, there are actually alternatives to dental implants. Especially if you have lost quite a few teeth over the years and for some time you have to put up with a simple acrylic denture which is uncomfortable and loose. Telescopic double crowns have been around for many years and mainly produced in Germany.

The correct provision of telescopic crown restorations is part of the dental curriculum in Germany. Some UK dentists have discovered the benefit’s of telescopic restorations so they are becoming more popular in the UK.

The fee for a telescopic denture depends on it’s design and location but is in general less than for a comparable dental implant restoration.
